“THE MERRY WIDOW
Arts & Entertainment Melbourne Opera continues its sell out tour of Lehar's ever popular "The Merry Widow" at the Capital Theatre on Saturday 17th September.

Here are just some of the reviews received from its Melbourne season:
The Australian – unmissable, …a superbly nuanced production
The Age – sheer delight, …an idiomatic, noble, and assured performance
Crikey – damn good fun, …another triumph
Theatre People – Melbourne Opera delights with this champagne comedy,
…quite divine
The Marketeer - something seems to be happening at the MO: should open new possibilities for the company; … the audience loved it and so will you.

"The Merry Widow" features an all star cast with popular soprano Dominique Oyston starring as Hanna Glawari, the Merry Widow, whose huge fortune is the subject of much intrigue during the course of the show.

David Rogers-Smith, who scored a massive success in last year's "Pagliacci", plays the dashing Count Danilo, Hanna's former lover who reluctantly accepts the job of seducing Hanna and saving the bankrupt principality of Pontevedro.

Popular Australian tenor Nick Seidenman plays Camille, the young lover of Valencienne, played by current local Bendigo girl Angela Hogan, and the comic roles of Baron Zeta and Njegus, the Pontevedrian Ambassador and Attache respectively are played by Ian Cousins and David Gould. In the pit is conductor Greg Hocking with the full Melbourne Opera Orchestra, and on stage the full Melbourne Opera chorus under the guiding hand of chorusmaster Bill Bamford. Hugh Halliday directs The production is performed in English with a hilarious new translation.

"The Merry Widow" is directed by Hugh Halliday and beautiful new "belle epoque" sets have been designed by Andrew Bellchambers. Costumes are designed by Zohie Castellano.

"The Merry Widow" swept the world in 1904 and remains a huge audience favourite largely because of the brilliant score which features Merry Widow Waltz, Girls, Girls, Girls, and of course, "Vilia", Hanna's great aria in Act 2.
