1824 - Lieutenant Miller stepped ashore from the Amity and with 40 convicts established a settlement which moved to the site of present-day Brisbane in the autumn of 1825. Free settlers arrived in 1838. A site had been chosen by Governor Brisbane at Breakfast Creek. 1856 - The first Tasmanian parliament sat. Made up of 15 members in the Legislative Council and 30 in the House of Assembly, they had been selected by men of a certain income and property owner-ship. William Champ was sworn in as the first premier, but only remained in power until February the next year. 1940 - The all-weather road in the NT from Tennant Creek to Birdum opened. Work had started in September, with a team of 170 building the eighty-six mile section. 1986 - Al Grasby resigned his job as community relations advisor after the release of the Nagle Report on the dis-appearance of anti-drug cam-paigner Donald Mackay. The report suggested Grassby had tried to conceal evidence in the case by not allowing the Calabrians to be involved and that he had a misguided sense of duty in that regard. more on today » |
