lol
your claim that there is no attractive shops is based on what research?
i have asked many people and most say the same things and say that thier friends agree. so from my personal research
i am correct.
walking a couple of blocks has not been the issue. people you guys are saying that you want people parking outside the cbd.
most work places wont smell very nice if people have to walk that far to work. |

I think there are some good shops down the mall but there is nothing unique. The only real draw card is Myer in my opinion. I was recently in Murray Bridge in SA. A town that doesn’t have much going for it to be honest.
I was speaking to a local (60years old for reference) and he and his wife had been through Bendigo a year ago on a Sunday. They loved all the old buildings but were disappointed they couldn’t find and shops hat were open or public conveniences. Maybe the traders should do some more research on Sunday trading.
The multi storey car park will only service businesses that are using it. It would have to be user pays as I will never use it and I don’t want to pay for it through my rates. I would much prefer the people who do use it pay for the construction and maintenance costs by paying their $10 a day fee. How many people would park in it if it cost this much? How much would you pay? |

The same research you use - a quick walk down there will show this to be so. There are no shops there that are unique and real drawcards.
i have asked many people and most say the same things and say that thier friends agree. so from my personal research

hardly a broad cross section - did you also ask these people if they were happy for up to 30 to 40 million dollars of their rates money to go towards this car park.
walking a couple of blocks has not been the issue. people you guys are saying that you want people parking outside the cbd.
most work places wont smell very nice if people have to walk that far to work.
Maybe an extra spray of deodorant would help, hardly a good reason to spend so much on a car park. The current one is not used to capacity so why would this one be? |

lol you always seem to have an answer huwjon.
i agree with the sunday trading. when we had our cafe it was one of our better days until the businesses in bath lane cottoned on and the we lost to them.
most of our trade was people out of bendigo. and they all loved what we had. |

I would never claim to have all the answers. The important thing is to make sure the decisions made are based on informed discussion and argument, not on a bendigo weekly beatenp story.
Dont forget this is the same paper that climed to have secured our water supply by pushing for the pipeline, but now is full of indignation when the water price is increased to pay for the afore mentioned pipe line.
My point about the mall shops is that there is no wow factor there - nothing to get the average punter to want to go shopping there - so adding another car park at vast expense will do nothing to change this fact. People are voting with their feet and heading for the marketplace!
Other than word of mouth, what evidence is there that we need the car park? |

Well it is a real shame that the current crop of councillors have decided to continue with this silly car parking idea. They are now talking about $16 million for this collasal waste of space.
Lets face it. All that is required is more long term car parking. This can be achieved through improved public transport, cycling and park and ride transportation. Lets have a think about it.
If this car park was commercially viable then a private company would have built one ages ago. It will just be a drain on ratepayers for years to come. |

i just hope they do it right and cost effectively.
We have a bigger problem in Bendigo. The ever growing number of franchises and chain stores.
they are killing the small guys.
JB hifi was a music store and they sell prety much anything. even computers.
people will buy their computers there because they are cheap.
the big problem is they are CHEAP. and you will get no support.
the council has an obligation to stop this.
too many cafe's and restaurants aswell. when will it stop? |

Scottm, you are going well off topic. start another thread if you like. There are not too many resturants and cafes in Bendigo. What is wrong with a major employer coming into town and employing more locals? The council has no obligation to stop this and if they want to stop me from getting cheap electrical goods they can go and jump off a bridge.
The car park will never be done cost effectively. It is a car park. Think about it. It is not needed. There are alternatives to the car park. listen to reason and not to the Bendigo Weekly for God's sake. |

Well Scottw. my apologies for the name mix up.
I am not a franchisee. Thanks for the condecending tone though. I see you are really trying to achieve some goodwill amongst the users of your site. Also last time I looked we werent in communist Russia and the distribution of wealth shouldnt have anything to do with government, local or otherwise.
I am only suggesting that if you want to run this site correctly you should moderate the discussions so that topics are kept on subject. Maybe this is why the Bendigo council wont give web development jobs to local firms. They are just not professional enough. |

yeh whatever
like the council listen to any of us.
we pay the rates so we as a comunity should be given the opportunity to do any work needed by the council.
including building, electrical, web design, computer services(repairs, purchases etc), graphic design and so on.
its our money.
the thing about the parking is that most want it. so they will do it. or at least not too many are complaining.
as i said i will say whatever i please as all our members are able to do within our rules.
cheers |

I pay rates as well and I want my money being spent on a quality product. as long as that product is from Australia I dont care. If there is nothing on offer here in Bendigo I approve my council to go elsewhere.
I have'nt given up hope that the council will see sense and not build the car park. At the moment there is a very loud group of people who want the car park. They are supported by a very influential, free property guide. I just dont think it is right for all the ratepayers of Bendigo to have to pay for a service that few are going to get to use. |

i tell ya what
when its built make sure you stick to your morals and dont use it.
the council is paid with bendigo money and thus should support our town 100% of the time.
anyone who thinks otherwise is stupid or a liar.
which are you? |

Well Scott,
Your professionalism amazes me. How could the Council not select you to construct a web site for them? Your communication skills and conflict management techniques are outstanding. I wouldn’t stoop so low as to accuse you of being stupid or a liar. I may say you are a small-minded, uneducated twit but lets not make things personal. |
