i was born in bendigo and my father was in the army at fortuna in 1953 and in 1964 we moved to canberra because the army was updating to russell and so my life was begun again there .being young i didnt miss bendigo and i went back a few times to see if i would live there again and i quickly picked up the bendigo stroyn-slang talk but now it is almost gone no matter where you go ..we used to talk real slow and 'how you goin mate ' type but its all gone now .in canberra when we first moved here it was very hoyty-toyty ..but it has slang now so every thing is mixing .as if every where we go now we all sound the same .

By hoity toity, I guess you mean English accented. There is so little activity on this site I am feeling that 99% of Bendigo residents are in fact dead. Maybe its only a very few, who know this site exists?

Welcome skeatesy & Elisheba I came from NZ to Bendigo to live with my lovely wife. She was from Bendigo and her family Hugh Brennan her grandad was also in the army. I know about the gold rush that made Bendigo the richest regional city in Victoria but my question what happened in the war times in Bendigo and how did they get through it?
